Act VI: Richard the Lionheart & Saladin the Compassionate

Richard the Lionheart

Saladin the Compassionate

Saladin was born in Mesopotamia in 1138. He was the son of a Kurdish chief named Ayyub.
His uncle Shirkuh was sent to Egypt as vizier by the Seljuk Sultan Nureddin. Saladin
became vizier of Egypt after his uncle Shirkuh’s death in 1169. .Richard very much
wanted to meet Saladin. Saladin sent his brother El – Adel to meet Richard.

Scene1. Richard meets El-Adel (Saladin’s brother). Richard sings ‘ Tell your
brother Saladin’ song. Richard Introduces El-Adel to his sister Joanna. They
entertain El-Adel. Richard’s soldiers dance the morris dance . El-Adel
soldiers a halay dance.

Richard suggests el-Adel and Joanna get married and be King and Queen
of Jerusalem. Pope objects a Christian Queen to marry a Muslim.
At the end Richard and Saladin came to an agreement over Jerusalem in the
treaty of Ramla 1192, where Jerusalem would remain in the Muslim hand but
would be open to Christian pilgrimages.

British historians call Saladin as “Saladin the Compassionate” because of his
virtue, forgiveness, magnanimity and generosity.
Richard returned to England and re – claimed his kingship. He was
killed by an arrow during a siege of a castle in France in 1199.
Saladin died in 1193 aged 56 in Damascus, Syria. His treasury could
not conjure enough money to pay for a funeral, as he had given it
away to those in need.
